Chapter 16

Fallen, Caught, Lap.

After that night I had to confess my concerns about the boy being a threat to my claim on her were definitely lessening. Not only having heard so from her own mouth, when claiming they were just friends. But also doing so to her sister, who was no doubt a person she would have confided in if there were deeper feelings to confess.

But then again, I had yet to hear her make any such claim on her true feelings for me. So maybe I was wrong in this assumption. Maybe she was just a very private person and speaking on such matters of her heart didn’t come easily to her at all.

Either way, I was satisfied and found some relief in how she acted around me when we were alone. The rapid pounding of her heart, the breathy responses, like the sharpness of breath whenever I touched her. Even her unwillingness and arguments made last night when hearing how I would soon leave, for it was clear she didn’t want me to go. It all pointed towards the girl feeling our connection and thankfully because of it, I had not yet ruined my chances to claim her heart due to the mistakes I had already made.

So, for the moment, I was at least satisfied in one area of this complicated situation, that this ‘Jack’ was nothing more than a pest that would only buzz around her for so long before giving up. For she was making it clearer by the day that she was not interested. Now if she would just let him know that, then I could consider it at least one problem to tick off the list, as unfortunately, there were many.

Also not doing this sooner rather than later would have been preferable I thought on a growl as we pulled up close to where Sophia’s next class would be. For there sitting on the large blanket of grass, one now filled with groups of students all taking advantage of the warmer day, was Keira next to none other than the fly.

“Is that going to be a problem?” Sophia asked in response to my growl, no doubt more than willing to take care of the ‘problem’ for me. But no one else knew what I had discovered about the boy last night and therefore didn’t know that the ‘problem’ couldn’t actually be fixed. Which was why I decided to use Sophia as the spy she always intended to be.

“Ask her if he is her boyfriend,” I said cringing at the term I just used but knowing it was standard terminology in this time period. It just sounded so juvenile, and not a term I ever wanted to be heard when being referred to in Keira’s life. Now soul mate, life partner, fiancée or husband, were ones I was very much looking forward to.

“Consider it done.” She said opening the door and getting out which was when I had an afterthought.

“And Sophia…”

“Yes?”

“Tell her I was the one asking.
